On December 6, 2007, the City of St. Petersburg filed a report with Pinellas County entitled “Tierra Verde North Commercial Annexation Report.” The report was filed pursuant to Section 171.042 of the Florida Statutes, as a “Prerequisite to Annexation” and represents the first formal step toward annexation of part of Tierra Verde.
Counsel for the Association previously obtained correspondence and other records from the City demonstrating that the commercial properties at the North end of our island, better known as the Tierra Verde Resort and the Tierra Verde Marina initiated the annexation process and surrounding property owners, including the 7-11, are now involuntarily included in the proposed annexation.
A vast majority of island residents, as well as your Association are adamantly opposed to this event and the tactics being used. This is not an attempt on the part of St. Petersburg to annex Tierra Verde, but an attempt on the part of the Marina and Resort owners to secure greater development rights under the St. Petersburg codes/policies to further their intentions to expand the resort and introduce gambling operations at the marina. On December 18, 2007, our attorney John Thomas and TVCA board member Jack Parker both spoke before a regular meeting of the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners to communicate just the right amount of information in a non confrontational manner, yet letting everyone know that the TVCA and residents are 100% against this obvious attempt at an eventual complete annexation of the Island. We believe the County stands with us on this blatant land grab by the City of St. Petersburg.
